Makarov Stepan Osipovich

- (1849-1904), admiral, versatile and talented navigator and explorer. Makarov clearly realized how important it was for Russia to have the possibility of regular navigation along the northern coasts and how important it was to know the nature of the Arctic seas for this.
Having studied, including practically, the experience of ice navigation accumulated over the centuries, having achieved the support of the government, Makarov designed the FIRST IN THE WORLD Arctic icebreaker "Ermak" and personally supervised its construction in England.
In 1899 and 1901 Makarov led Yermak's campaigns to the north of the Barents Sea. These were the first research icebreaking expeditions! Among the various observations of the ocean and atmosphere, special attention was paid to the study of sea ice, for which, for the FIRST TIME, filming was used in scientific practice. After the expeditions, Makarov summarized the scientific results in the book "Ermak in the Ice". The ship was in service for over half a century and remained one of the most powerful icebreakers in the world.
The monument to the icebreaker "Ermak" today is represented by a composition - a monumental mosaic panel on the wall of the building and anchors at the foot on the pedestal. It is located at the end of the main building of the Murmansk Regional Museum of Local Lore on Lenin Avenue. It was opened on November 3, 1965.
